The challenge of the 44%

Some thoughts on the Pew Survey: It is not particularly news to me that America’s life of faith is defined by fluidity. All I have to do is look out from the pulpit every Sunday. In my own parish, I have four basic groups of parishioners: people who used to be Catholic, people who used to be Lutheran and people who used to be something else. Oh, I almost forgot, the fourth group of people are the ones who grew up and remain Episcopalian.

Anna J. Cooper

Anna Julia Cooper, the widow of an Episcopal priest and a teacher at St. Augustine’s College in North Carolina, was an important supporter of [Alexander] Crummell’s efforts to foster racial uplift. Cooper, who was born in slavery, emphasized the value of education, religion, and proper conduct in assisting the rise of black women and men in the South.

More San Joaquin congregations opt to remain

Membership in the continuing diocese is growing with 17 congregations remaining with TEC and the possibility of more. Some are start-up and some are continuing congregations. About five others are also considering continuing with TEC. 42 of 47 diocesan congregations voted in December to leave TEC and to realign with the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone.

On Monday The Lead covered the op-ed by Joe Feuerherd appearing in the Sunday edition of the Washington Post. Today the Post has a response by the director of media relations for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: “The bishops never align themselves with any party or any candidate, yet Feuerherd declares them for McCain. He puts the bishops in the Republican Party despite that fact that on many positions they could be considered Democrats.”

Denominations must be aware that many Americans change their religious affiliation/identity. They must be open and welcoming to those who are inclined to switch. They should also be prepared to part with a significant portion of their adherents on a regular basis. Exploring “Secret” Mark

In the back of a collection of letters of Ignatius of Antioch, handwritten pages from a letter of Clement of Alexandria (150-215 CE) to Theodore identify three versions of Mark known in antiquity: a gospel written in Rome; an expansion of the gospel written in Alexandria by Mark for those “being perfected in the faith;” a further expansion of Secret Mark by Carpocrates that Clement rejected as false.

Herbert had a particular fondness for the imagery of bees and herbs. Bees represent productive lives not least when Herbert expresses his deep desire to serve God usefully (‘Employment I’) or when he laments his spiritual weakness (‘Praise I’).
