Thanks to everyone who visited during the General Convention. The Cafe received 181,645 visits and 619,816 page views during the month of July. That’s our biggest month ever. The visits came from 77,961 sites–second only to the 86,000+ sites which connect to the Cafe in January, when we were involved in publicizing Bishop Gene Robinson’s participation in the Obama inauguration.

The proposed Anglican Covenant would be an out of the ordinary device that would completely alienate the Church of England from the culture it serves. Justice for gay people would continue to be won, step by step, in English society, but the churches would become an anachronism living in their own ghetto of bigotry.
Did Judas deserve this fate? If Jesus informs you that you will betray him, and tells you to hurry up and do it, are you really responsible for your act? Furthermore, if your act sets in motion the process—Christ’s Passion—whereby humankind is saved, shouldn’t somebody thank you? No, the Church says.
Surely, I am not the only one who is tempted to see unhelpful condescension in this language. In this piece, I’d like to suggest a more charitable reading, which I hope might provide some guidance for how to apply C056 during the next triennium and beyond.
