But at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Rev. Susan Beem Beery said she asks herself, “What would Jesus do?” and comes up with a totally different answer regarding guns in church. She said a few years ago when universities were addressing whether to allow concealed weapons on campus, the Episcopal churches passed a resolution not to allow guns in their buildings.
A few professors have noticed an occasional bright light shining out from the dull, party-going, anti-intellectual masses who stare back at them from class to class. Young men and women from strong religious backgrounds, these professors say, often do better than their peers, if only because they are more engaged with liberal-arts subject matter and more inclined to study with diligence.

If we take Jesus seriously, we’ll find ourselves singing, praying and eating with the rich and poor, the homeless and those with mortgage woes, the ones we’d like to vacation with and the ones we’d rather serve lunch to, behind the protected wall of a parish hall’s kitchen counter.
Love, not doctrine, nor order, is to supply the bands which draw Christians together. . . . Let us begin wherever people of a co-operative spirit are to be found: and not spend our effort on organization at the centre.
