2011 Hymn Madness champion named

Thank you to the 404 visitors who participated in our Hymn Madness poll. The poll asked you to rank your top 5 of the 13 most common hymns (here’s how they were seeded). After discarding those faulty ballots we ended up with 312 entries. A first place vote was given a weight of 5, a second place vote a weight of 4 and so on.

The results are:

Rank Title Sum

1 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling 755

2 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty 518

3 O Sacred Head, Now Wounded 440

4 Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken 436

5 Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah 383

6 Crown Him with Many Crowns 376

7 All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name 325

8 How Firm a Foundation, Ye Saints 312

9 Abide with Me: Fast Falls the Eventide 277

10 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross 270

11 Jesus Shall Reign Wher’er the Sun 257

12 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come 225

13 In the Cross of Christ I Glory 66

“Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” is the clear favorite.

A playoff between Love Divine and Holy Holy is taking place here at our Facebook page.

Although my favorite is “Abide with Me”, my bracket was not entirely busted. I had “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” a close second.

“In the Cross of Christ I Glory” lags well behind. The design of the poll does not allow us to say whether that reflects a common dislike for the hymn, or whether it’s just not a favorite.

No organists were harmed in the process of this research.
