The Rt. Rev. Richard Sui On Chang, who was the fourth bishop of the Diocese of Hawaii, died on August 30. He was the first native Hawaiian bishop for the diocese, and served from 1997 to 2006. Chang was then succeeded by Robert L. Fitzpatrick, who had been his canon to the ordinary.
Chang’s Bachelor of Arts degree was from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, California. He also studied at the University of Hawaii.
In addition to serving many roles in the Diocese of Hawaii, Chang served for a time as vice president of the House of Bishops. He is survived by his wife, Delia, and two daughters.
