The Guardian writes a strong op-ed in support of the Rev Libby Lane, describing her consecration today as an indicator of a more progressive Church of England. They are less decisive about the upcoming consecration of Rev Philip North, describing him as a highly qualified Bishop but criticizing his opposition to women Bishops.
From the article:
The consecration at York Minster on Monday of the Rev Libby Lane as the new bishop of Stockport shows that the Church of England has got at least one foot in the 21st century; the consecration next week of the Rev Philip North as bishop of Burnley shows that it still has a rump in the fifth.
They refer several times to an earlier article they wrote on Lane, analyzing a 12 minute documentary the Church published on Youtube, where she talks about how public her new role will be and the opportunity to be a role model.
From the article:
“I am aware that what I say and do will be heard by millions, many of whom have no other contact with the church,” she says.
“They will make an assessment of Christ in that, and so I’ve been trying to hold the prayer that, whatever I’ve done or said, somehow Christ will be seen in it, or at least I won’t get in the way of that.”
Are you excited about the consecration of Lane? Does it inspire you in your ministry?
