The Diocese of Atlanta will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of women deputies to General Convention with a special presentation for Lueta E. Bailey, given by Dr. Bonnie Anderson, president of the Episcopal Church’s House Deputies. Bailey was one of the first women deputies to General Convention in 1970.

Some 600 clergy and lay delegates from throughout North and Middle Georgia will come together Nov. 12-13 for the 104th Annual Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, Atlanta.
When Bishop of Atlanta J. Neil Alexander convenes the meeting at 10 a.m. Friday, offers his 10th annual address to the council, and presents the proposed 2011 diocesan budget, he will also take time for a tribute to a woman who 40 years ago this year broke through the gender barrier at the highest level of church governance.
Lueta E. Bailey, a resident of Griffin, will be honored by Dr. Bonnie Anderson, president of the Episcopal Church’s House Deputies, during a special presentation Friday afternoon. In 1970, Bailey was one of the first women allowed a seat and a vote at a General Convention.
Bailey had long been a leader in the church, but in the realm of the Episcopal Church Women. A member of St. George’s, Griffin, she was active in the Diocese of Atlanta ECW and was elected in 1966 to serve a three-year term as national ECW president.
