Google is celebrating St. Andrew’s Day with a new Google Doodle according to The Telegraph and other news sources and noticed by anyone using the google search engine. See more on St. Andrew at Speaking to the Soul on Episcopal Café.
When users go to the search engine’s [UK] home page they are met with the Google logo painted in tartan red with the Scottish flag in place of the letter L.
It has been created in celebration of St Andrew’s Day, Nov 30, which is celebrated all over the world.
St Andrew was a fisherman and one of the disciples of Jesus responsible for spreading the new faith throughout Asia Minor and Greece.
He was killed by the Romans in Patras, a city in Greece, by being crucified on an X-shaped cross, which would later become the heraldic symbol known as the Saltire found in Scotland’s flag.
St Andrew is also the patron saint of fishmongers, singers, … women wishing to become mothers.
Celebrations for St Andrew’s Day begin last week and herald the start of Scotland’s winter festivals which culminate with Burns Night on Jan 25.
Many churches celebrate St. Andrew with bagpipes, kilts, and kirkin’ o the tartan.
The United States formally acknowledged Scotland’s national day for the first time with an official telegram from Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on behalf of President Obama carryinng this greeting for St. Andrew’s Day.
