Bishop Coleman McGehee has died

The Detroit Press carries this obituary of the Rt. Rev. H. Coleman McGehee, retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. It begins:

The Rt. Rev. H. Coleman McGehee, a retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, died Thursday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac after a short illness.

McGehee, 89, of Bloomfield Hills served from 1973 to 1990 and became known for his commitment to justice and human rights. He fought sexism and racism and was a fierce defender of women’s reproductive rights.

McGehee — with now retired Detroit Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and the late Rabbi Richard Hertz — founded the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights.

McGehee also championed the cause of women and gay people. He ordained the Rev. Meredith Hunt the first woman priest for the Diocese of Michigan in 1977.
