Boosting nursing in Haiti

The Wall Street Journal’s Melanie Grayce West writes a story on Carol Roye and her colleagues’ efforts to train and accredit nurses in Haiti, leading to better care and greater respect. An excerpt:

Ms. Roye and her colleagues, working with Haiti’s Faculté des Sciences Infirmières in Léogâne and the Episcopal University of Haiti, have developed a master’s program in nursing. Faculty from New York will begin teaching in Haiti this fall for the three-year program, which will be taught in-person, online and in a clinic setting.

Nurses who complete the program will be nurse practitioners and able to do much of the same care as physicians. A baccalaureate curriculum is in development, too. The cost to educate a nurse is $5,000, according to Ms. Roye.

In creating a higher education program in nursing, “we are creating sustainability” so that Haitian nurses that complete the program will then educate their peers, she says.
