The Diocese of Zanzibar, of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, has completed the restoration and repair of the exterior to Christ Church Cathedral in the city of Zanzibar on the island of Unguja. Locals raised their portion to pay for the repairs and received additional funding from World Monuments Fund Britain. The next phase begins the interior and the development of a Heritage & Education Center. The Center will offer a bilingual program in English & Kishwahili for school children.
Hoping to promote interfaith understanding and communication between disparate communities, the program aims to raise world-wide awareness of modern day human trafficking, as well as, share the East African history of participation in the slave trade. There are more slaves today than at any point in human history. The trafficking of women is the 2nd largest industry in the world. And once again Zanzibar is a focal point in modern slave trade, especially in the trafficking of children.
In addition to being bilingual, the center is to be accessible for those with disabilities, including the use of sign language.
