A Sikh cartoonist, writer and performance artist has decided to respond to Donald Trump’s racist and discriminatory statements by mailing him a postcard, every day, until the end of Trump’s campaign. Vishavjit Singh has invited anyone interested to contribute to the project, hashtag #SendSikhNoteToTrump, with only one rule – that the postcards not be negative or insulting.
According to the Huffington Post, Singh calls the outreach a “humor based, compassion laden, literary and illustrative takedown of Trump.”
“It is easy to find cuss words and call him a racist, fascist, Nazi, etc,” Singh told The Huffington Post. “I want to take Mr. Trump’s own words, which he is very good at hurling like grenades, and hurl them back at him with new packaging.”
The cards are being sent to the Trump Tower in New York City — 725 Fifth Avenue — addressed to the presidential hopeful himself. They feature Singh’s original art, playing on the xenophobia many Sikhs experience as a result of misconceptions about their faith.
“The idea was hatched 30,000 feet above the ground as I was traveling to the west coast to host cartoon workshops at a middle school,” Singh told NBC News. “The messages are inspired by my passion for Sikh, Buddhist and Sufi traditions along with the spirit of literary/civil rights giants who made Harlem their home at some point which now happens to be my home. Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X to name a few.”
