Knitting as ministry and mission

A group of knitters at St. James Episcopal Church in Boardman, Ohio is showing their appreciation of veterans by creating prayer shawls.

The Knitters for Veterans was a organized by Ann Sitler, a 75-year-member of the church, and includes many longtime members, including 91 year old Wealthie Price.  Price was motivated to join the knitting group because of her grandson, who is a Marine.  Nearly 70 prayer shawls have been sent to the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, after being blessed by St. James’ priest in charge, the Rev. Shawn Dickerson.

Members of the group include Sitler, Price, Regina Jenkins, Mary Ellen Maruschak, Florence Hosler, Becky Borman, and Paula Ulicny.

Sitler’s mother was the leader of a knitting group at the church during World War II.

The ladies cite the fellowship of their companion knitters as another benefit to the group, in addition to the service they provide to the veterans.
