From our friends at Episcopal News Service:
The Rev. Cathleen Chittenden Bascom, from the Diocese of Iowa, was elected Oct.19 as the 10th bishop to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas. She was elected on the second ballot during an election that took place in the worship space of Grace Cathedral in Topeka, receiving 64 votes from lay delegates and 56 votes from clergy.
Bascom is the first woman to be elected bishop since the diocese was formed in 1859. This also marked the first time in the history of the Episcopal Church that a bishop heading a diocese was elected from a slate of candidates who all were women.
Others on the ballot were the Rev. Martha N. Macgill of the Diocese of Maryland, and the Rev. Helen-Svoboda-Barber, from the Diocese of North Carolina.
Bascom’s biographical information is found at the Kansas Bishop Search site.
Pending a successful consent process, her consecration will take place on March 2, 2019 at Grace Cathedral, Topeka, with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry as chief consecrator.
This is the first of several episcopal elections being held in the next few weeks. The others include Colorado, the Convocation of Churches in Europe, and Virginia.
