A powerful moment in Ferguson

With the unending stream of horrifying images coming out of Ferguson this past week–the tear gas, the unrest, the arrests of reporters, and the curfews, you may have missed what happened there yesterday.

A rally was held for the family of Michael Brown, the unarmed teenager shot by police a week ago. Several people: civil rights leaders, family members spoke, but most notably, Captain Ron Johnson, the State Highway Patrol officer who has taken over command of the security situation in recent days, also spoke. Cpt. Johnson is credited with calming down a volatile situation. (Until local police gave a series of ill-considered press conferences.)

A video of his remarks is here.

In the church, we talk about the power of repentance: the power that comes from asking for forgiveness.

We also talk a lot about what servant leadership looks like–partnering with the people you lead, and walking with them.

This speech is a masterclass in both.
