Ever since yesterday’s NFL draft, in which Michael Sam became the league’s first openly gay draft pick, I have thought about how to support Michael in his vocation as a professional football player and ambassador for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered athletes. Though I do not know you, Michael, you are in my prayers this day:
Holy God, you call us to do the works of Christ who came to live among us in love as a servant. Our true call is to be transformed into his likeness. As Michael Sam begins his new job in the National Football League, grant him wisdom and skill, so that the work of his hands may bring him satisfaction. Help Michael to be faithful, honest, and fair with those who labor beside him, and let them be so with him. May he glorify you in all he does, through Christ whose life emptied out brings us to rest in your love. Amen.
If you would like to add your own prayer for our brother Michael, I encourage you to tweet your prayers this evening and join my prayer on Twitter @episcopalcafe
