Alberto Cutie speaks to Episcopalians in Oklahoma

The Rev. Alberto Cutie was in the diocese of Oklahoma this month, at the invitation of the bishop, speaking at one of the primarily Hispanic congregations. He preached, led some discussion groups, and at a dinner on July 22nd, spoke candidly about the process that led him to be received into the Episcopal Church:

“Cutie said people often ask him about his decision to become an Episcopal priest. He said the question is logical because he was a Catholic priest for 15 years and was highly visible, working in Catholic and secular media. (In fact, he was known as ‘Father Oprah’ for insights he shared through advice columns, radio and TV.)

He said some people have a mistaken belief that being a member of the Catholic Church is the only way to be a Christian. He said he embraced the Episcopal Church because of its belief that Christians need to walk together ‘toward the goal, which is heaven.’

‘Nobody here has the monopoly on truth,’ Cutie said. ‘To me, that is a very important message that our church sends out pretty clearly.’

Cutie said the Episcopal Church, from the clergy to the parishioners, has welcomed him and his wife with love and warmth.

‘For us, being Episcopalian is not being part of some exclusive club,’ he said. ‘It’s being part of a spiritual family that is open to everyone.'”
