In 1977 the Anglican-Episcopal Church of Japan (Nippon Sei Ko Kai [Japanese: 日本聖公会, Nippon Seikōkai, “Japanese Holy Catholic Church”]) established the Bishop Williams Memorial Fund. The Fund recalls the Rt Revd Channing Moore Williams, a TEC missionary and later a bishop serving in China and Japan. Bishop Williams was instrumental in establishing a number of educational institutions in Japan which thrive to this day. One was St Paul’s School which is now the Rikkyo University.
The Memorial Fund was established to support visiting lecturers and research scholars. The Fund is presently accepting applications for an 18 month opportunity to study Japanese and do Anglican research in Japan. The applicants must be 34 or younger as of 1 OCT 2017 and hold an undergraduate college degree. Applicants are especially sought from developing nations in Africa, Assia and Latin America. The applicant must be proficient in the English language and will undergo an intensive training course in the Japanese language their first six months prior to the commencement of a 12 month research program. The successful applicant would arrive in Japan to begin the six months of intensive study in Japanese in OCT 2017 in preparation for the Japanese school term which begins in APR 2018.
Those selected for the fellowship will be provided round trip airfare to and from Japan, single occupant living quarters, and a monthly living allowance. Tuition and fees will be waived and funding for research expenses will be provided. An additional round trip airfare will be granted part way through the 18 months to allow the intern a visit to their home and then return to Japan. It is expected that the research will be conducted at Rikkyo University or another educational institution affiliated with the Anglican-Episcopal Church of Japan. If necessary, arrangements will be made for research at other Japanese institutions. The visiting scholar may be invited to share their research as informal lectures for the students and faculties of the institutions hosting their research.
An applicant should be an Anglican or a member of another Christian church, and requires the recommendation of an Anglican bishop.
