The Interim President and Dean of Seabury Western Seminary, Robert Bottoms, is asking questions about how we need to change our formation model and the resources that support it as we move into a new century of the Episcopal Church’s life in America.
“Seminaries have two basic concerns, and we want to be true to both of them. The first is of course, educational. As we envision the future in whatever form our ministry takes, we cannot give up on scholarship–on developing a learned clergy and a learned laypeople…But we’re more than an educational institution. Seminaries are not just about education, they’re about religious formation. We study together, we pray together, we dream together, we work for social justice together. And so we have these two emphases: formation and education. And we keep them in mind as we form new avenues of ministry and new forms.”
