Bishop Curry writes the Mayor of Raleigh

From The Right Reverend Michael B. Curry, to Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane:

I am writing to encourage you and others in positions of leadership to work together with those serving our homeless brothers and sisters to find a compassionate, constructive and creative way forward as you address the dilemma that came to a head last Saturday, August 24, 2013, in Moore Square, when Love Wins Ministries and others were prevented from delivering food to the hungry because of a city ordinance….

A pivotal principle of Christian morality is summed up in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth when he said, “As you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me,” (Matthew 25:40) or similarly when he said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12).

I suspect that all people of goodwill of any faith or conviction can affirm the truth of these words. And I am asking you, as our Mayor, and the members of our Council and leadership, in this spirit, to work with those serving the homeless and find a positive, creative and compassionate way forward.
