Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena CA has launched a website, Fuller Studio, as a resource for spiritual formation. One of the first resources available at Fuller Studio is an interview of Bono and Eugene Peterson in Eugene’s home on Flathead Lake in Montana. Bono of course is the well-known lead musician for the band U2. Bono was raised in the Church of Ireland. Eugene Peterson is the translator of the popular Bible paraphrase The Message.
Bono and Dr Peterson talk about their childhood encounters with the Psalms, which have had a profound effect individually on their lives. For Dr Peterson the Psalms taught him that imagination was a way at getting to the truth. He relates how as a pastor he would personally translate a Psalm for someone to use as a prayer for an issue in their life. Bono was taken by the honesty about the human condition expressed in the Psalms. He shares his frustration with contemporary Christian songwriters because they don’t use the example from the Psalms to write honestly about life.
If you are interested in a special pdf of Dr Peterson’s translation of the first 40 Psalms as found in The Message and a specially written introduction by Dr Peterson, you may request it from Fuller Studio.
