Freedom’s Just Another Word
Nachshone was all about freedom. And as Saint Janice Joplin taught us, freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. Nachshone continued.

this week I’m going to look inside for validation of my worth, not waiting for someone else to do it for me (even if they could). As I said before, I just need God and Jesus. The rest is up to me.

Although John clearly gave them an earful, he doesn’t say “I’m not going to baptize you.”

Next time you hold your favorite cross or receive or give a blessing, remember Jesus dying in shame and isolation. And then think about living in a way that reflects that kind of self-emptying.

Scripture truly is like living water: just as you can’t step into the same river twice, scripture also rolls through our lives and refreshes it in unexpected ways.

The nights can be long, Lord,
But so is the vastness of your love and presence.

Like Joseph, we can also find ways to wait actively, expectantly, and boldly. We can make preparation, creating space in the world and in our own hearts for the Kingdom of God.

We can’t know in advance whose life will have been the kind of life that speaks of holiness, and so we can’t look out on this morning’s congregation and know who is a saint and who is a sinner.

In order for me to have faith I have to have a God I can trust, a God who isn’t going to solve all my problems for me because then I won’t grow.

I’ve always been a planner and organizer (of space and time), so it is difficult for me to see any downside to planning ahead. That said, there are definite downsides to getting locked in to a vision of how life will go.
