Cathedral’s carillonneur brings joy to Des Moines

Mark Babcock had an idea for Easter Sunday 2020. The organist and choirmaster of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Des Moines played the church’s carillon. He’s been playing every Sunday since.

For years, the church has automated the instrument, a computer system instructing a machine to pull the cables and clappers.

Babcock, the church’s organist and choirmaster, began playing the instrument live on Easter morning in 2020, when the leaders at St. Paul’s wanted to give parishioners a special experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to the machine, Babcock can play softer or louder or faster or slower.
