Christian-Muslim violence kills 21 so far in Nigeria

Religious violence between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria is spreading and is so far uncontrollable despite government efforts. The violence in Jos, in the middle of the country where the Christian south and Muslim dominated north meet, began on Monday.

“An Associated Press journalist counted 21 bodies awaiting burial at the city’s central mosque Friday. At the Jos University Teaching Hospital, doctors collected at least 12 bodies with gunshot and machete wounds, while 82 people were wounded in fighting, said Dr. Stephen Yohanna, the hospital’s chief medical director.

[…]Though army and police units moved into the affected neighborhood late Monday, the violence spilled into other areas as the unrest continued throughout the week. Police and military officials declined to comment Friday on the violence.”
