Church Times: year in review

Church Times reviews the year of news from a Church of England point of view:

A review of how television shapes public discourse is here

The year 2008 was another one in which, as the merest glance at the front pages of your newsagent’s more popular titles would confirm, Britain’s public discourse has been shaped by television broadcasts.”

Radio programs are reviewed here.

Among the best radio programmes of the year were a number of science programmes, including Cosmic Quest (Radio 4, from August), a series in which Heather Couper presented a history of astronomy from prehistory to the Hubble telescope.

… the theme of forgiveness links my three picks of the year in the broad “religion and morality” category. In Search of Forgiveness (Radio 4, November) picked up on a theme dramatised in earlier in the year in Forgiving (Radio 4, April). Both presented a sensitive and nuanced picture of our instinct to forgive, and the justice, or otherwise, of doing so. Both featured the Revd Julie Nicholson, whose daughter was killed in the 7/7 bombings in London, and who vigorously defends her right not to forgive the perpetrators.

On newspapers, Church Times says:

The mood among newspapers is apocalyptically gloomy. They were already threatened by the internet, without having any good idea about how to make money when competing with Google. Now that the economy in general is heading for a really nasty recession, it is commonplace to speculate how many papers will close next year.

Books, the Arts, Obituaries and Appointments are also covered in the year end review.
