Gay couples have begun seeking marriage licenses in New York City on the first full day same-sex weddings are legal in the Empire State.

New York City officials expect to host hundreds of same-sex weddings Sunday. Clerks in New York City and about a dozen other cities statewide are opening their doors Sunday to cater to same-sex couples.

CNN:

Phyllis Siegal, 77, and Connie Kopelov, 85, were married in a chapel at the city clerk’s office as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

Hundreds of same-sex couples heard the news Friday that they made the cut in the marriage lottery that New York state instituted for Sunday when the state’s Marriage Equality Act took effect.
