Due to the pandemic, the Episcopal Café has taken an interest in sports.
Thursday, Episcopal-Baton Rouge defeated their rivals Country Day in the first day of the (delayed) high school season in Louisiana. The score was 41-7. Country Day’s only score came on a punt by Episcopal.
The school is a ministry of the Diocese of Louisiana:
Our Mission and Ministry
“As a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, Episcopal High School of Baton Rouge nurtures and develops the whole child — spiritually, intellectually, morally, physically and artistically — through challenging academic and co-curricular programs which prepare our graduates for college and for purposeful lives.”
Episcopal is holding in-person classes. Pictures from the website suggest that precautions are being taken. See here, and here.
Regarding precautions taken during the play of Thursday’s game, photographs suggest players on the field did not wear masks. The Advocate reports,
There were COVID-19 reminders everywhere with rows of bleachers in the stands marked for either social distancing or blocked off to remain empty. Fans wore masks and so did the players and coaches on the sidelines to open the LHSAA’s COVID-19 delayed season.
Episcopal’s coach said playing football gave his players hope:
“It is start … just to be out playing was something we did not think would be possible this summer,” Episcopal coach Travis Bourgeois said. “It keeps them engaged in classes and everything else. It gives them hope.”
Members of Episcopal’s dance troupe performed wearing masks and were socially distanced from the band.
In the early hours of Friday, President Trump tweeted that he and the First Lady were positive for COVID-19. Others who attended the Rose Garden introduction of the president’s Supreme Court nominee have also tested positive. Many at the Rose Garden got as close football players do on the field.
