Excommunicated bishop continues to cause trouble in Zimbabwe

The Zimdiaspora reports that excommunicated former bishop Nobert Kunonga, continues to cause trouble for this successor in the Diocese of Harare:

Harare – The Anglican’s St Luke Church in Rhodesville has been sealed off by riot police following violent clashes between a faction belonging to excommunicated Harare Bishop Nolbert Kunonga and the one belonging to the official Bishop of the Diocese Chad Gandiya. ….

For several months now, the rival parishioners have been violently clashing during church services despite the presence of dozens of riot police deployed to maintain order…..

“This is no longer religion. The Anglican church is now a laughing stock of the country because of these unending fights. Kunonga and his politics must just go and leave us in peace,” [a member of the church] said.

Police have been biased in favour of Kunonga who is a staunch supporter of President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF. The police have allowed Kunonga’s supporters to attack rival parishioners.

A few things worth noting: Kunonga was kept in office for years despite numerous, well-documented criminal charges against him, by former Central African Primate Bernard Malango, a hero of the Anglican right and member of the panel that wrote the Windsor Report. In an effort to divert attention from his behavior, Kunonga said he was breaking from the Central African province because after Malango’s departure, it had become soft on homosexuality. As part of this campaign he made numerous false allegations against other Central African bishops, especially Trevor Mwamba of Botswana. These allegations were dutifully reprinted by the Anglican right.
