Ekklesia says that leaders Christian, Muslim and Jewish groups will meet just before the next G20 Summit of world leaders scheduled to meet in Pittsburgh next week.
Organized by Bread for the World, the Alliance to End Hunger, and other partners, more than 25 national religious leaders representing the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths will attend from 22-23 September 2009.
Together, the religious leaders will press for actions — not just words — that will help hungry and poor people to lift themselves out of poverty.
There will be a press gathering at the beginning of the Faith Leaders’ Summit, after which they will process in full clerical regalia to the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, at 320 6th Avenue, where they will meet with representatives of the US delegation to the G20.
“The most important indicator of economic recovery should be what happens to hungry and poor people – the many families who are struggling in our own country and the tens of millions who have been driven into hunger around the world,” said the Rev David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World.
The recession came on the heels of two years of soaring food prices. Together, these crises have led to dramatic increases in hunger and poverty around the world. For the first in history, over a billion people are suffering from hunger.
During the week of the G20 Summit, on 24-25 September, US administration officials are expected to provide details on a new initiative to reduce hunger and poverty around the world.
