The Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond Virginia is flying a rainbow flag in observance of LGBT Pride Month as a symbol of their commitment to “the values of acceptance and inclusion”. A Virginia legislator is calling for its removal arguing, in part, that it supports an act which he says is still a felony in Virginia.
“Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, is calling on the bank to remove the flag, terming its presence “a serious deficiency of judgment by your organization, one not limited to social issues.”
In a letter to Richmond Fed President Jeffrey M. Lacker, Marshall says the homosexual behavior “celebrated” by the bank “undermines the American economy.””
The Bank has announced that it intends to fly the flag for the full month of June. Groups in Virginia have begun to issue statements either in support or in opposition to the act. All of this is taking place in the context of an ongoing shift in American views of acceptance for same-sex relationships. (Last month a Pew survey reported that 53% of Americans now believe that same-sex marriages should be accorded the same rights as traditional marriages.)
