The 90-year-old Carter gave one lesson to about 300 people filling the small Baptist church that he and his wife, Rosalynn, attend. Just a few days after revealing publicly that cancer has spread to his brain, 90 year old Jimmy Carter taught his regular Sunday School lesson Sunday at the little red brick Baptist Church in Plains GA of which he is a member. Former President Carter has been teaching Sunday School at the church for over 30 years. Sunday more than 460 folks crowded into the small church that has about 40 regular members. Some folks had driven hundreds of miles over-night and started lining up about midnight in order to secure a seat. Carter taught a second class at a local high school to accommodate about 250 more folks who couldn’t get into the church building earlier and still at least 70 more folks were turned away.

It was a well-known lesson – when life’s burdens grow heavy, pray to God for strength. The topic was perhaps more poignant because of his recent diagnosis. He only spent about 5 minutes at the start of his lesson discussing his own health. The lesson covered faith, love and relationships.

God, I’m really troubled. I ask you to give me the strength to bear whatever is on my shoulders and to bear whatever comes to me.
Former President Jimmy Carter

After teaching the class at Maranatha Baptist Church, he promised folks that he would return after teaching the class at the high school and allow them to take photos with him. Many reported the inspiration they received from his message.
