A couple who were homeless and living in a tent now offer services at Christ Church, Ramapo, NY for others who are homeless:
When Junior and Tuesday Vazquez tell their homeless clients they understand their struggle to survive, they mean it. The married couple lived in a tent in the Ramapo Mountains in Hillburn a year ago.
Thanks to a remarkable turnaround, now they run a program that offers a place for homeless men and women to relax, wash up and eat six days a week. A Resting Place is based at Christ Church of Ramapo in Suffern. It’s open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday to Saturday and leads into the soup kitchen that’s also offered by the Episcopal church.
“We understand exactly where they’re coming from, as far as their needs and frustrations,” said Junior Vazquez, 46, who was homeless with his wife of five years in Manhattan for the past three years. “We try to ease that by providing them with services.”
