Every now and then, the Daily Scan of the nation’s media, which we receive through the good offices of Neva Rae Fox, washes up a salutary story about good Episcopalians who have caught a writer’s eye simply by doing what they have always done. Yesterday’s scan brought two.
This one, in the Frederick News-Post:
If former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall becomes an official saint in the Episcopal Church next year, Frederick residents Bruce and Janet Eberhardt will be pleased and satisfied.That’s due in part to the fact that the Eberhardts have helped advocate for Marshall’s recognition in the church since 2005 for a lifetime spent fighting racial injustice.
On May 15, two days shy of Marshall’s proposed Feast Day, Bruce Eberhardt, a retired Episcopal priest, will preach before a chancel reading by young parishioners at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Frederick in honor of Marshall’s distinguished legal career, he said.
And this one, about Charles Shipley, the verger at Grace Cathedral in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Nearly everyone I meet has never heard of a verger. They ask, “What does a verger do?” and I’ll say, “It’s a little bit like a house manager. It’s a little bit head of logistics. It’s a little bit stage manager. And there’s choreography that goes with it as well.”
