I keep wondering
how did we get here?
I keep lamenting
we shouldn’t be here –
sheltered in our homes
afraid to touch friends and family
sleep deprived
missing school, friends, graduations
cancelling plans
afraid to make new plans
grieving loved ones from afar
uncertain when we’ll reemerge
and who we will be
worried we won’t have changed at all.
I keep wondering
how did we get here?
I keep lamenting
we shouldn’t be here –
but then I see something
growing where it shouldn’t
catching my eyes
a piece of bark
and a brilliant flower.
I keep believing
we will grow
in surprising places
in surprising ways.
