Leaked still shot from upcoming Grantchester episode; why are Sidney and Geordie lounging on an out of period sofa?
Spoiler alerts: plot details follow.
The BBC has exciting news about a special Easter episode of ITV’s Grantchester, with a surprise guest; the Bishop of Rome himself will make a special visit to our beloved Cambridgeshire village.
The real surprise is that this won’t be an actor portraying His Holiness Pope Pius XII, but Pope Francis himself, who is apparently a huge fan of the smash hit.
Sidney will learn that the Pope’s visit is part of an ecumenical visit to show how a model Anglican Church operates, and he worries that his problems with whiskey and drink will embarrass his Bishop (played by Ian McKellan).
Just before the Pope arrives, Sidney overhears a loud gunshot, which he nearly misses over the sound of his organist practicing.
Fortunately, it’s not a murder; the Pope has just arrived and his car has backfired! The loud, off-key practice session prompts a serious debate between Sidney, Mrs. Maguire, and Leonard Finch, about the future of the organ in worship services.
Just as the debate about the proper role of organ music in church starts to become unpleasant, Geordie Keating will arrive, with a gift of Peeps®. Peeps® were invented in 1953, but first came to England in the late 50s, making them an era appropriate novelty gift to celebrate the season of Easter, although it seems a bit off combined with the picture of Geordie and Sidney lounging on a sofa.
What do you think? Is this a serious episode, or the type of silly one-off episode that British tv shows sometimes produce? Will you watch this episode on Easter day?
