A coalition of organizations is sponsoring The American Prayer Hour as an alternative to the National Prayer Breakfast which is connected to both the semi-secret religious and political group known as The Family and, through them, to the ‘Kill-The-Gays’ bill being proposed in Uganda.
On February 4th, we are launching The American Prayer Hour. It is a multi-city affirmation of inclusive values and a celebration of diversity. It is also an action to protest the sponsors of The National Prayer Breakfast, which will take place on February 4 in Washington, DC.
While The National Prayer Breakfast is ostensibly a benign event, it is hosted by a secretive fundamentalist organization, The Family, which is directly tied to the draconian “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda. We strongly urge those invited to the National Prayer Breakfast to reconsider attending the event. Instead, they can join us at our American Prayer Hour.
Sponsors include Truth Wins Out, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Human Rights Campaign, PFLAG, GLAAD, National Black Justice Campaign, the Metropolitan Community Churches, and Full Equality Now DC.
On February 2nd, a press conference for the event will be held at the National Press Club. Bishop Gene Robinson will be one of the speakers as will Frank Schaeffer, author, Crazy For God: How I Grew Up As One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right and Lived to Take All Back, Harry Knox, The Human Rights Campaign, Director of Religion and Faith, Moses, A gay Ugandan man seeking asylum in The United States, Rev. Elder Darlene Garner, Metropolitan Community Church, Board of Elders, Bishop Carlton Pearson, Senior Interim Minister at Chicago, Illinois’ Christ Universal Temple.
