Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will preach opening night at Trinity Wall Street’s conference on race

Trinity Wall Street has announced that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will give the opening sermon for TI2016, “Listen for a Change: Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice,” taking place January 21-23.

“I think my election is a move in the right direction,” says Curry in an interview from Trinity about the upcoming conference and the issues it will address. “It was a church saying ‘we’re going to find the person who’s the right person for us as a church at this particular moment in our history, and I think that’s a good thing, but we’ve got work to do…

“We must never settle for the way things are.”

In the interview, Curry draws theological parallels among racism, poverty, crime, war and the environment:

“The reality is, some of the same dynamics that are a part of racism are some of the same dynamics that are a part of our not caring for the planet in which we live, are some of the same dynamics that are a part of every war that has ever been fought, and by that I mean we’re really talking about sin.”
