Sanctuary movement of the ’80s springs to new life in Arizona

When Rosa Imelda Robles Loreto walked through the doors of Tucson’s Southside Presbyterian Church this month,she followed in the footsteps of thousands of Latino immigrants.

The 41-year-old mother came to the church seeking sanctuary and reprieve from a deportation order resulting from a traffic stop that could whisk her back to Mexico, away from her family and a life she has built in Tucson over 15 years.

She is the second person this summer to take refuge at Southside Presbyterian, which has ties to the national sanctuary movement that started at the church in 1980.
