Although Episcopal Café loves baseball, we are keeping our eye on the World Cup. Dave Walker at Cartoon Blog is leading the way among Anglican web sites with his Cartoon Church World Cup Sweepstakes.
I’ve decided, for my own idle amusement, to run a World Cup sweepstake here in my office in the heart of Industrial Basildon. Unfortunately, as I am the only one who works here it has the potential to be less than enthralling. As things stand I will have an approximate 100% chance of winning, which does remove a certain element of excitement. The Warwick Beacon tells of the Rev. Marsue Harris, a priest for almost 30 years. Harris relates the early difficulties and her current ministry:
In the ’70s, women weren’t encouraged to serve in the Episcopal Church. Like in other denominations, the priesthood was left for the men. Then came Marsue Harris. …“There was a lot of anger and ugliness directed at women in the early days,” she said. In one instance, when Harris went to deliver the Eucharist to a kneeling man, he glared up at her and said she was following the path of Satan. While walking down the street in her collar on another day, a passerby spit in her face. “You can’t take it very personally when someone objects,” she said. Some 30 years later, Harris is happy to report a brighter outlook.

Bishop Gene Robinson will participate in the Gay Pride parade in Santa Fe, NM and speak in Santa Fe and Albuquerque:
The Rev. Dr. Richard Murphy, who is hosting Robinson at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church (with HaMakom), said he disagrees with those who say church leaders should not participate in the parade. He and his wife, Carol, have marched in the parade in the past. “I’ve worn my clerical collar and will do so this year. It is a place where the church should be present. Jesus stood with those on the margins, those who are so often disenfranchised from society’s mainstream. We are called to be imitators of Jesus,” he said.
