Today, many of us will expend a lot of energy keeping it together. Any number of things could feel like they’re pulling us apart: our many spheres of responsibility, our own health and well-being, our personal relationships, or the organizations and communions of faith that shape our lives and require our strength. There are days when we’ll ask ourselves how on earth we can keep it all together.
Our epistle this morning has a crucial piece of reassurance for us. In describing Jesus Christ as the one through whom and for whom all things are created, the Scripture tells us, “in him all things hold together.”
No matter how many directions pull at us and our communities, the force of Christ’s outstretched arms and open heart are always working in the opposite direction. They draw and hold all things together, even when things seem like they’re coming apart. Is there anything we can do today to cooperate with this spirit of Christ instead of trying to keep it together all on our own?
