Survivors of sexual abuse at St. George’s School and school officials announced Wednesday that they have settled a claim for compensation for up to 30 alumni, for incidents going as far back as the 1970s.
The settlement, whose terms remain confidential, caps months of allegations of sexual abuse by staffers and students at the elite school in Middletown, R.I., from dozens of alumni….
The school and alumni released a joint statement Wednesday praising what some are calling reparations.
“St. George’s has done something meaningful and important for survivors,” said Anne Scott, whose allegation of rape in the late 1970s by the former school athletic trainer was the catalyst that brought forth other allegations. “It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to receive this kind of validation and support, after all these years. Our spirits are renewed on our forward healing journey.”

The agreement comes before a report expected this month by a third-party investigator hired by the prestigious school, and SGS for Healing, an alumni survivors’ group into sexual abuse of dozens of students by teachers and staff in the 1970s and 1980s.
The school fired three staff perpetrators during that time frame, but acknowledges that it never reported the abuse to state child protection authorities.
