Super Bowl weekend bishop bets

America’s great liturgical gridiron weekend is upon us, and as is customary, community leaders from Wisconsin and Western Pennsylvania are placing friendly wagers on this year’s game. Bishop Jacobus of Fond du Lac and Bishop Price of Pittsburgh have stepped up this year on behalf of the Episcopal Church:

“‘Of course the Packers will win,’ Jacobus said, ‘but regardless of the outcome of the game the needy will benefit.’ Jacobus will send 25 pounds of brats donated by a Sheboygan business to Pittsburgh, and Price will send a similar amount of food here, each to be donated to a local feeding program.

Chuck Miesfeld, owner of Miesfeld’s Meat Market , was eager to donate the brats. A life-long Packer fan with a Packer ‘shrine’ in his home, he was unavailable for comment because he’s already in Dallas for the big game.

‘There’s always opportunity to give’ Jacobus said. ‘We don’t need the excuse of a football game to help those in need, but it is kind of fun. I hope everyone who hears about this will gather a grocery bag of food and donate it to a local feeding program.’

Along with food donations, the Bishops also agreed to wear the jersey of each other’s teams at an upcoming national House of Bishops meeting. Why? ‘When Episcopal Bishops from across the country comment, we’ll tell them about the bet and encourage them to do something like it’ Jacobus shared.”
