Anger, shock, and deep sadness – those seem to be the prevailing sentiments expressed over the mass shooting in Orlando by the public, and they have been echoed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and a number of Bishops in the Episcopal Church.
Episcopalians across the church wore orange shirts, orange ribbons and even orange liturgical stoles June 2 as a sign of their commitment to reducing gun violence in their communities.
Bishop Mariann Budde of Washington and Bishop Ian T. Douglas of Connecticut tell why they will orange as they work for an end to gun violence.
“There are other rights that we care about, as well, and we have to be able to balance them. Because our right to worship freely and safely — that right was denied to Christians in Charleston, S.C.; and that was denied Jews in Kansas City; and that was denied Muslims in Chapel Hill, and Sikhs in Oak Creek. They had rights, too.”
