The Rev. “Howdy” White was fired by St. George’s Episcopal School in 1974 after a student came forward saying he had been raped by White on several occasions. The firing was not revealed until December of 2015. On Sunday the Providence Journal reported on a foster child of White’s is alleging he was raped.
It appears from the record that the plaintiff subsequently learned information tending to indicate that the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of West Virginia, may have known of White’s alleged proclivity for deviant sexual behavior. – Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia
Title IV proceedings are under way for the Rev. George E. Andrews II and the Rev. Howard White. And a new victim has come forward, this time in North Carolina where White served as rector of Grace Church in the Mountains.
Former Massachusetts attorney general Scott Harshbarger was named Monday to oversee a new investigation of the embattled St. George’s School, which has been mired in a sex abuse scandal dating to the 1970s.
In addition to serving on the Governing Board of the National Association of Episcopal Schools from 1992-2000 (as Vice President from 1995-1996 and President from 1996-2000), the Rev. George E. Andrews II was the recipient of the Ruth Jenkins Award for Outstanding Service to NAES in 2004. Rev. Andrews has continued his involvement and commitment to Episcopal education by maintaining associations with key constituencies, enabling him to remain connected with the issues and trends in Episcopal school chaplaincy and to cultivate a wide network on behalf of chaplain search efforts.
A choir director and clergy person who left St. George’s Preparatory School in Rhode Island went on to full careers in schools and parish ministry, some of which had been contacted by victims. In addition, allegations at St. George’s now extend as late as 2004. And there are allegations of a culture of student male on male rape.
An investigation by St. George’s School has found that a total of 23 students were sexually abused by three school employees in the 1970s and ’80s, according to a draft of a report provided to the Globe Wednesday evening. The perpetrators were fired, but the prep school did not report them at the time to child protection services, as mandated by law. – Boston Globe, December 23, 2015
