The Church of England consecrates a second woman to the episcopate.

19194903618_39765236a4_qFriday, 3 JUL 2015, the Achbishop of York, the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, was chief consecrator of the Revd Canon Alison White as a bishop. Canon White is the second woman to be elevated as a bishop in the Church of England, following the Rt Revd Libby Lane, the Bishop of Stockport. The congregation attending the service numbered more than 2000, including 60+ bishops, most from the Church of England, but some having traveled from as far as South Africa and New Zealand.

Bishop Alison will serve as the Bishop of Hull, a suffragan See in the Diocese of York. She is married to the Rt Revd Frank White, the acting Bishop of Newcastle. They are the first bishop couple in the Church of England. Alison was born in 1956, received a BA from Durham University in 1978 and an MA from the University of Leeds in 1994. She began her theological studies in 1983 at Cramner Hall, St John’s College, Durham University. She became a deaconess in 1986, was ordained a deacon in 1987 and a priest in 1994. She became a canon of Peterborough Cathedral in 2009. She has been serving most recently as the vicar of St James Church, Riding Mill, Northumberland.
