The 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church is throwing a big party at Victory Field on Sunday, July 8, noon-4 p.m. and everyone is invited.
“Step Up to the Plate for Partnerships: The Indianapolis Experience” represents a major experiment in generosity, inviting guests to enjoy food and drink, four stages of music and entertainment, and over 75 attractions from Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers cheerleaders, to Indy car and NASCAR displays and games, to historic re-enact- ing and highlighting Indiana’s heritage with limestone carving, popcorn growing, and arts and crafts. With the exception of beer, wine, and souvenir purchases, those attending are simply asked to donate what they can in gratitude for what they have received. All donations will go to support human needs in South Sudan, Brasilia, and Haiti. The event has been paid for by a large number of sponsors and in-kind donors, including event Partner Sponsor Thrivent Financial.Among the highlights of the day are a “Gi-Normous Musical Chairs Contest” in stadium seats at 1:15 p.m. and an attempt to set a Guinness record for most people dancing Samba (in honor of the church’s Brazilian guests) at 1:30 p.m. Music of all types will be featured, from a 1940’s Andrews Sisters tribute group , to steel drum and African drum bands, to salsa, a contemporary party band, and a concert by renowned The Dean Osbourne Band bluegrass group. Those attending the event will mingle with thousands in Indy from throughout the country and the world here for the Episco- pal General Convention. Nearly 5,000 persons are expected for worship preceding the event at 9:30 a.m. at the JW Marriott and the public is encouraged to join in that event, too.
