The MDG’s: Now is still the time

Peter Wallace, writing at the Huffington Post, reminds us, through the words of national and international voices of advocacy, that we must not turn aside from our commitment the Millennium Development Goals. Though the economic crises of the past few years have caused many of us to lose our immediate focus on the goals, the immediacy of the needs of the developing world have only increased because of the same crises.

The Rev. Wallace chooses voices such as Jimmy Carter, Hodding Carter and Bishop Michael Curry, all people who are appearing in a special series entitled “Faith & Global Hunger” on Day 1 to call us to remember our responsibilities.

Bishop Curry, in his segment, says in part:

“Participation by people of faith in the work to abolish poverty and hunger through the accomplishment of the Millennium Development Goals is…a witness to the gospel. This is not a utopian fantasy or a vain hope. For if the nations of the world, religious communities and peoples of the earth of goodwill would truly commit to using 0.7% of our financial resources to support international development, the numbers of people suffering…could be drastically reduced to the point that poverty itself would be on the endangered species list. Poverty, as U2’s Bono often says, could become history.”
