Wisdom Cries

Wisdom cries out in the street;
in the squares she raises her voice.

At the busiest corner she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks

Proverbs 1

Saint Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” I usually give you an essay full of words, but today I want to use fewer words, more images.

You may remember this verse from about a month ago. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. Part of it, I am sure, is that I have been out on the streets of a fairly large city and I have heard whispers of wisdom, seen her face glancing up at me, and felt her gaze as she tries to get my attention.

As I was organizing some old photos I realized how frequently I stare wisdom in the face and often don’t even realize it. So, today, with fewer words, let me share some images of wisdom. Be clear, this is not a photo essay. I am not telling a story. I have not limited myself to one theme, or even two. I am giving you lots of images because wisdom comes in lots of forms. Just look. See if there is any wisdom for you in each photo. Imagine where you might find wisdom this week.

Wisdom is out there. She is on the corner and she is crying out. Can you hear her?

Linda McMillan is in Bahrain where wisdom is surely out there!
