Friday a week ago, 18 NOV, what is thought to be the largest Zumbathon in a church and perhaps the first in a Cathedral, was held in Chester Cathedral in Chester UK. Over 500 people attended a two-hour Zumba class to raise funds for BBC Children in Need programs. Each attendee paid £10, all of which was donated to the charity. The Chester Chronicle reports that £6000 (£1=$1.25) was raised. The event was sold out. Attendees were encouraged to wear white and bright colors as the interior was lit with UV lighting during the Zumbathon.
The fund-raiser was the idea of the organizer of the event, the Revd Helena Roulston. She is the Curate of St Chad’s Church in Winsford UK, and part of the Diocese of Chester. The Curate is also a Zumba instructor herself.
One of the projects of BBC Children in Need, in nearby Webbington on the Wirral Peninsula, is Claire House Children’s Hospice. Chester is in the hospice’s service area.
Claire House Children’s Hospice is a children’s hospice in England. The hospice provides care for babies, children and young people up to the age of 23, with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions. Services include specialist respite, palliative, end of life and bereavement care.
