The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop has issued a fourth in their series of educational pieces ahead of General Convention. The first, second, and third essays are linked here.
Now, with only a week and a half to go before the Convention opens, this final essay describes the timeline and process for voting to be followed in Salt Lake City.
Of particular interest might be the presentation of the four nominees to General Convention on June 24th from 1:30-4:30pm local time. “Deputies, bishops and alternate deputies will be guaranteed seating; registered visitors to General Convention will also be given access up to the hall’s capacity. After the bishops are introduced, each will be allowed three minutes to introduce himself. Prepared questions and two-minute answers will follow. The nominees will each offer a closing statement.
The House of Bishops will meet to vote on the next Presiding Bishop on June 27th, following the Convention Eucharist. Once an election has been achieved, and has been ratified by a vote of the House of Deputies, the Presiding Bishop-elect and his family (as available) will be presented to the House of Deputies.
The new Presiding Bishop-elect will be the preacher at the closing Eucharist at the end of General Convention on July 3. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will be the celebrant. The new Presiding Bishop will be seated at the National Cathedral on November 1st at noon.
